Somalase SHR hair removal Technology

Our Somalase SHR Devices work by gradually heating the dermis to a temperature that effectively damages the hair follicles and prevents re-growth. Clinical trials and tests in researching this worlds newest technology has shown that a slower heating process is more effective for permanent hair removal rather than high and short levels of energy. When the SHR (Super Hair Removal) is used the results are exceedingly more effective as it is passed over the skin 3 to 6 times using the (gliding) technique which uses a low energy but a high rate of repetition of short pulses that are delivered deep into the dermis achieving high average power (up to 10Hz which is 10 times per second) and prevents energy from concentrating on a particular point on the skin and thus generating burns due to overheating. It heats to a comfortable 45C compared to a 65-72C of other hair removal systems including your traditional IPL.

Technology in Use

Melbourne Laserderm Clinic

The SHR handpiece, a large rectangular window emitting light is applied to the surface of the skin. The energy travels harmlessly through the epidermis and dermis until it strikes the hair follicle, which contains a dense, melanin-rich hair shaft and bulb.

The SHR Somalase can be used all year around. The lower delivery of heat more frequently heats up to a comfortable level targeting the hair follicle and not surrounding tissue. There are 6 skin types in the Somalase menu which is why this is one of the worlds best hair removal system for all skin types.

SHR uses 810-nm diode laser technology, the gold standard in laser hair removal since its introduction in 1998. Unlike earlier systems, however, SHR energy penetrates deep into the dermis (where the hair follicle is located) with high average power and a rapid 10 pulse-per-second repetition rate. Using this technology allows homogeneous distribution and more effective energy to be delivered with improved patient comfort. The unique pulse structure of our SHR Diode incorporates two discrete pulses. The first is a preheated long pulse that safely heats the tissue; the second short pulse effectively destroys the hair follicle and its surrounding vasculature.

Need to knows

  • From certain medications to pregnancy or hormonal changes, lasered hair can grow back, but usually in a much sparser and more manageable way
  • On the right hair type, 6-8 sessions usually zaps 60-80% of hair
  • Avoid the gym, make up, swimming, hot baths and showers for at least 24 hours after a laser session as this can aggravate the skin

It takes commitment

You should see results from your first session, as the hair tends to become thinner and doesn’t grow back as fast. Your hair will then appear to grow back as normal, but after 2-3 weeks it falls away and a new regrowth cycle begins. ‘You should leave 4 weeks between facial laser hair removal and 6-8 weeks between body laser hair removal, after a course of 6-8 treatments you may need to leave it a bit longer between visits as the hair growth will slow down.

The science:

Laser treatment affects hair in the active growth phase (anagen stage). The laser beam is made up of precisely controlled pulses of energy which are absorbed by the melanin or pigment in the hair and reaches into the active hair follicles that lie beneath the skin.

The energy heats the hair, right down to the bottom of the root, safely destroying it without damaging surrounding tissue or skin. At any one time, 90 per cent of follicles will be in the anagen phase, so a course of treatment is needed to ensure that all follicles are affected and will not produce any more hair.

A full course of treatments will result in long term reduction or permanent hair removal however, this is dependent upon individual skin tone and hair. An annual top up session is recommended for maintenance. Please speak to our advisor team for further information.
